Youth migration is a serious scourge that empties community of its competencies that can greatly contribute to the advancement of society. There are many reasons for this migration, including the heavy cumulative effects of war, changing of power in the region and other things.

Sam found it necessary and important to listen to the people of the region to identify the causes of this problem, find the solutions and make recommendations, so it held a dedicated session in Hajin city at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, 25/3/2021.

In the presence of 15 women from different groups of society, “People’s Assembly, Women’s Council, Teachers, Housewives.”

The session began with a speech by Ms. Safaa, director of Sam’s office in Hajin. She introduced Sam’s organization and the projects it carried out and supported. Then Mrs. Fatima, the session facilitator, talked about the concept of immigration and its types.

Fatima, an administrator in the Women’s Council, said that young people and men migrate and leave their countries for many reasons, including fear due to deteriorating security conditions and looking for work due to poor financial conditions in the region.

Huda, the women’s archive officer, said: Immigration is the movement from one country to another, to escape from a bad reality to a better one. Teacher Shorouk expressed her opinion on the concept of immigration, which is a punishment young people impose on their home country for rejecting them and making them lose the sense of belonging to it. It’s the exile chosen willingly by people who want to emigrate.

The attendees expressed various assessment and opinions regarding migration and its causes. Teacher Ruqaya explained that immigration has several types:

– External emigration: It means the movement from one’s homeland to another country, as immigrants cross the political and geographical boundaries of their homeland, such as the migration of our young people today to Europe, Turkey and other countries, to escape the deteriorating security conditions.

– Internal emigration: It means the emigration within the geographical border of a state, like moving from countryside to city. Immigration can be voluntarily or involuntarily, and can also be temporary or permanent.

Kafa, the council diwan officer, added that immigration can be legal with passport, or illegal, many of our people lost their lives because of this type of immigration while traveling across mountains and sea into the unknown. They don’t even know what awaits them.

So.. According to the attendees, migration has reasons that can be summarized as the following:

  1. The economic stagnation dominating the region.
  2. Young people have no clear rights.
  3. The forced conscription imposed on young people in our society
  4. Lack of employment opportunities
  5. The deteriorating security situation in the region, as many young people have been targeted with assassinations.
  6. Young people suffer psychological pressures due to successive wars, that targeted young people in the region.
  7. High prices and lack of employment opportunities.
  8. Temptations offered by some countries to attract young people.

Important role of young people:

According to Aida Al-Golan, the representative of the joint presidency of the People’s Assembly, young people migrate abroad due to the great economic stagnation in their society, and that young people are the builders of the future because they use their abilities to serve their society.

Fatima, an administrator of the Women’s Council, said: Young people have an important role in society. They are the ones who defend it. Immigration deprives their country of their abilities and competencies, that are very important to strengthen its economy.

The effects of youth migration on society:

Mrs. Umayya said that one of the consequences of youth immigration is that our society loses youth competencies and capacities, that help building it.

Huda, the women council archive officer, said that our society would have a name like that of the old continent, as we are losing our young men. This has also led to high percentage of spinsterhood, while the reason for it is clear and explicit.

All the attendees participated in assessing the consequences of migration on society, and according to them:

  • Society loses youth competencies due to immigration
  • Losing Arabic as a native language by time.
  • Some young people lose their religious values after immigrating.
  • Some young people give up their customs and traditions.
  • Losing the sense of belonging to homeland and stability.
  • Capital migration.

After diagnosing the problem and its negative consequences on society, the attendees found that migration is a serious scourge threatening society, and therefore solutions must be found and worked on.

What are the solutions?

The attendees agreed on the following solutions to combat immigration:

  • Fighting nepotism
  • Ensuring a safe environment for young people
  • Providing job opportunities
  • Providing transportation, housing and other necessary things for young people.
  • Providing financial and psychological support to young people
  • Improving services.

The session, that was held by Sam on migration and emptying society from young people, was interactive, and concluded recommendations to mitigate the great burden threatening the region and its future. The most prominent suggestions and recommendations made by the attendees were as the following:

  • Creating jobs for young people by providing livelihood projects.
